Be A “Greek God”, Not A “Small Pear”

Innovation, Evolution, Transformation and Change can all describe the same thing.  Whenever or wherever it happens, it is  profoundly obvious.  And when such things occur in the public eye, they are monumental.

In Film:

  • The Wizard of Oz brought Dorothy’s transformation to the big screen.  She and all of her friends on the yellow brick road evolved brilliantly.
  • Rocky (the original) had us all chanting for Rocky Balboa as he transformed himself from a no-named street thug into a household cheer.

In Entertainment:

  • Madonna has redefined herself at least once a decade during the past thirty years.
  • Lady Gaga has taken Madonna’s role of late with the hopes to remain on top in similar fashion.

In Business:

  • 3M had one of history’s most classic transformations once Art Fry invented the Post-it note.
  • GE, under the leadership of Jack Welch, evolved from a bureaucratic dinosaur to a nimble, dynamic and flexible juggernaut.

In Self Help:

  • There are thousands of self help plans to help transform ones personality, psyche, physique and everything in between.
  • Consider Bill Phillips 12 week challenge as part of his award winning plan, Eating for Life.  I did this program 10 years ago and it changed the way I thought about weight management.  The key message was as follows:

IF YOU LOOK LIKE A PEAR AND SIMPLY ADJUST YOUR EATING TO LOSE WEIGHT, YOU WILL LOOK LIKE A SMALLER PEAR.  BUT IF YOU INCORPORATE RESISTANCE TRAINING, YOU CAN CHANGE THE WAY YOU LOOK, BUILD MUSCLE AND REDUCE FAT!

It worked!  During a 10-month period, I lost 33 lbs, had 8% body fat, and completed a three-day 260-mile bike ride and the NY City Marathon.  I looked like a Greek God.

Well, maybe not……  ok, definitely NOT!

Your Business is no different:

If you cut expenses or processes and change nothing else, your company will be a smaller version of itself.  Conversely if you do what you do today, but a lot more of it, your company will be a bigger version of itself.

  • Is there something that needs to change in your organization?
  • Are there processes that can utilize technology to be more efficient?
  • Do you like what your company does to make money, how profitable it is or its ability to sustain itself as a smaller or larger version of exactly what it is right now?

If, like me, you want your company to be an I Cubed company, the answers to the above questions will get you inspired to innovate and implement.  When your team consistently pushes against the norm with innovative process and products, a positive transformation will occur.  Great things will happen.  Your company will evolve into a powerful, muscular, agile and sustainable organization.  While your company may not be as big as the “big boys”, there is no reason why it shouldn’t act like one in your industry.
